Roadtrips across the continent may seem daunting but with so many cultures, sights, beaches to see across the Mediterranean, it’s the perfect continent to explore over the Summer months.

1. Make a plan, but not an overly inflexible one.
If you’ve got a time limit (as most travellers will have), it’s a smart idea to understand the general route and stops you will take, where you will lay your head each night before setting off. Plan so your driving time is feasible and of course take plenty of breaks and drink lots of water in between! Then watch as your days are spent gloriously wandering, and following your wild road trip whims.

2. Don’t research your stops beforehand.
On a road trip, your schedule should have plenty of wiggle room, so you can afford to enter a new destination with no previous knowledge of what you’ll find. Being relatively clueless has enormous pluses: When you don’t know what to expect at a stop, you can’t possibly be let down by what you discover. And when you’re not bee-lining for the city’s most-visited tourist locales, you leave the door wide open for weird little discoveries… of the city’s true gems.

3. Don’t overpack so there’s room to collect.
You’re going to find authentic ceramic tiles in the Amalfi coast along with 100% cashmere scarves. And a year’s supply of  limonchello to go with it. And awesome wines in France.  It will be such a pity if your luggage and car is too full of suitcases to pick up these amazing finds.

4. Practice making new friends.
You can keep to yourself at home, but a road trip is not the time to do that. You can meet the best and most interesting people with different outlooks when you are in a foreign place. Swapping stories, tips and recommendations are all part of it, and hopefully swapping numbers and social networks will be part of it too!

5. Carry cash for tolls.
Toll roads can pop up in the most random of places, and their fares might be higher (and sometimes lower) than you expect. Stock your center console with the necessary euro coins and notes so you don’t get caught out. Make sure to keep tickets in a safe place to avoid being in a panic later.

6. Announce your whereabouts on social media
While Europe is a big place, there have been many times that you have the opportunity to bump into an old friend or acquaintance. it can be so nice to catch up and chat in a different environment and out of context.

7.  Ask a local where to eat.
Nine times out of ten, a local will lead you to a tastier, cheaper dinner with better more authentic atmosphere than a guidebook could ever suggest. Find a local who looks like they know the region, and ask the simple question. You won’t be let down!

8. Bring a real, actual map
Google Maps has made driving easy when abroad – but it’s infinitely far more fun to track your progress on a real, printed-out atlas map. Trace your route on the map as you go along, then hang it in your bedroom or office to reflect on the memories made.

9. Pack your mobile accessories – car charger, cable and power pack OtterBox Mobile Accessories  offer solutions for all your travel needs when on the go, abroad. Our favourite is the power pack, which thankfully is dust and splash resistant with a convenient battery status indicator, a durable solution with tested high speed charging

10. Capture, share and connect on your journey.
Ok you don’t want everyone at home to have FOMO over your amazing trip but equally your mobile device serves multiple purposes. A road trip is a once in a life time opportunity and if there’s one thing you’re allowed to do it capture the moments and share the moments via facebook or instagram.
