Happiest by the Sea

Why we would rather be by the sea

It’s the end of January and holidays are already playing on our mind. We are craving plans, holidays, time in the sun and of course by the sea.

But why are we happiest by the sea? This is by no means a blog with a huge amount of academic research behind it. It is more so mere observations of how the ocean makes people feel better and how spiritual the ocean is for people, for some it was part of who they are, for some people it even makes them better people.

My own guess is because a lot of our childhood memories are built around our holidays on the seaside which leaves lasting impressions on us into our adulthood. Spending carefree days playing with sandcastles and running away from crashing waves. Parents are relaxed and happy and days are spent worrying over whose sandcastles are better built or how many cartwheels you can do.

Another reason is due to the colour of the ocean.  It’s proven people’s mood increased more when they were shown a blue environment, compared to green, urban or a blank wall.

The ocean seems to trigger many of our senses – even listening to the ocean is a natural mood enhancer. Being around water helps us to relax, the sounds are more therapeutic than voices or music.

It could very well make us happier, better people, just watch a family on the beach, their body language and compare it to a family on a shopping trip.  And what’s even better is that it doesn’t cost you anything, being by the seaside is free.
