C o z i n e s s – a trend for 2017

aka Hygge in Danish

What is ‘Hygge’ and how has it become the trend for 2017. As of today’s date,  the Instagram hashtag #hygge has over 1.7 million perfectly curated posts to scroll through and that’s just the beginning of Hygge becoming a mainstream global phenomenon.

Interestingly, it has been on the rise since late 2015, with both TIME and The New York Times monitoring its overwhelming rise. Pronunciation can deviate from hyue-gar,” “hoog-jar” and “hoo-gah” (perhaps the most popular). There is unfortunately no exact translation of Hygge in the english language but many have attempted in the past year. Finding one word is tricky for Hygge but loosely it has been described as creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. It’s a simple concept, deeply embedded in Denmark and Nordic culture. Perhaps its this culture which is why Denmark is the happiest country in the world?

The most popular time to embrace Hygge is December during Christmas time due to the harsh winters in Denmark however you can still embrace Hygge well into Summer – nice company, good food, a nice scented candle to create a relaxed atmosphere are all important ingredients.
